About Recht.nl

About Recht.nl

Foundation, Mission & Coverage

Recht.nl is an independent online platform specialised in Dutch legal news, case law and abstracts of legal scholarly articles, established in 1998.

Recht.nl aggregates and categorises content from verified sources of professional legal information, whether it be Dutch courts, Dutch University’s law departments, websites of governmental agencies and law firms or Dutch legal journals. Recht.nl keeps daily track of over 200 of such verified, professional online sources (third party websites), circa 150 trade journals, as well as postings of hundreds of Dutch legal organisations and individual legal professionals on LinkedIn.

These de facto media partners join together to ensure that coverage from all across the Dutch legal domain is reflected on Recht.nl; categorised in 18 areas of law (‘rechtsgebieden’).

Recht.nl’s values

Objectivity & impartiality

Recht.nl disseminates daily updates on developments relevant to the Dutch legal community. Recht.nl covers legal processes upstream of ‘regular’ daily news, summarising issues relevant to Dutch legal professionals without taking sides.

Recht.nl’s content is produced in full impartiality, without favouring the political views of any national or international institution, government, political party or pressure group. We report on the latest case law as passed by the judiciary and changes in codified law as decided by the legislator without passing any personal opinion.

Transparency

Recht.nl clearly demarcates news from opinion and commercial communications.

Media independence

Recht.nl maintains its independence with a diversified business model and it does not privilege views from sponsors.

This obligation of independence dictates the conduct of all editors and staff members participating in preparing editorial content, from news-gathering to publication - to ensure continued reader confidence in our content.

Recht.nl’s editor-in-chief acts as the guardian of the website’s editorial independence and impartiality and is the guarantor of its editorial policy and respect for the principles of honesty and pluralism of information.

Recht.nl takes seriously the need to avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived. Anyone in a professional relationship with Recht.nl must:

  • Disclose a potential unavoidable conflict.
  • Refuse gifts (financial or in-kind), favours, and special treatment, that may compromise integrity or impartiality, or may damage credibility.
  • Deny favoured treatment to advertisers, donors or any other special interests.

Legal News content

Recht.nl consists of a mixture of different types of News content aimed exclusively at Dutch legal professionals:

  • News Articles: daily governmental and judiciary developments relevant to the legal community, featuring 18 main legal fields.
  • Analysis News Articles: commentaries on recent case law by lawyers and legal scholars.
  • Background News Articles / Scholarly Articles: reflections on and trend analysis of current developments in Dutch law.

Verification standards

Recht.nl is committed to accuracy in all its content and being factually correct both as a value in its own right and because accuracy is absolutely vital for legal professionals. Where possible Recht.nl goes back to primary rather than secondary sources and links to sources are provided with every article.

The standard verification procedure is as follows:

  • Articles are first checked by the editor, who fact-checks the article using their policy expertise.
  • A second check is carried out by an editor for structure, grammar and style, along with additional fact verification.

Corrections

Though every article published on Recht.nl is reviewed twice before publication, even the best news coverage can contain errors or require further clarification. Any reader can propose a correction on the content of any article via our contact form.

When a mistake is identified, an editor will look at the original and double check if it is appropriate to amend it.

Feedback

The founding mission of Recht.nl is to create an online service exclusively dedicated to Dutch legal news, where there had not been one previously.

If you have feedback you wish to give to Recht.nl the most direct way to reach us is through the contact form on our website.

Ownership

Recht.nl is owned by LexIQ B.V. which is headquartered in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Recht.nl’s funding comes from subscriptions (80%) and advertising revenues (20%). None of the subscribers is in any way dominant and activities are spread across commercial partnerships and sponsorship of Recht.nl content (always clearly labelled as such) and separate products such as the Recht.nl Vacaturebank.

Where content is not produced independently by the editorial team, it is always flagged as advertiser content, with a beige background distinguishing it from the rest of Recht.nl’s editorial coverage.

Where content is editorially produced but the piece itself is directly made possible through funding, this is made clear with a “Supported” label and information identifying the sponsor.
